27th January, 2012

Steve Tilston is one of this country’s greatest songwriters, widely recognised within the world of folk and contemporary music,  with many of his songs considered modern folk-song classics.  He’s also a magnificent guitarist with an ability to be subtle or almost orchestral by turns. His song “The Reckoning” has just been nominated in the “Best Original Song” category in the 2012 BBC Folk Awards with the winner to be announced very soon.

Steve's songs are always well-crafted  little gems and many have been covered by such luminaries as Fairport Convention and the likes. In recent years, he has blossomed , and is now gaining the wider recognition in the media that he so richly deserves.  Steve's in the North East this weekend and you can see him on Saturday, 28th January at the Davy Lamp in the Arts Centre, Washington.  Highly recommended!

Ruth and Sadie Price have both been heavily influenced by traditional song from a very early age. They sing mainly unaccompanied songs  and some contemporary material with occasional concertina accompaniment.  The pair both have lovely voices with some grand harmonies and you can see them on Sunday, 29th at the Rugby Club in Westoe.

Elsewhere this week, its singers' nights in all the local folk clubs, kicking off on Sunday 29th  January,  at the Rugby Club in Guisborough and the Monkseaton Arms Whitley Bay; Monday at  the Dun Cow, Bournmoor, the Bridge, Newcastle and the Sun Inn , Stockton; Tuesday at the Britannia, Darlington,  the Ball Alley, Stanley  and the Daleside Arms, Croxdale; Wednesday,1st February  at the Catholic Club, Birtley and  the Berkeley Tavern in Whitley Bay and on Thursday, 2nd at the Tap and Spile, Durham, the Wellington, Wolviston, the Black Bull, Blaydon. the Folk Bar in Ashington Leisure centre and the Arts Centre, Darlington.

Happy Listening...
