9th May, 2008.
There's a wide range of performers to be seen in
the local folk clubs this week.
Kicking off on Saturday, 10th May will be
Irishman, Ben Sands. A member of the famous Sands Family, Ben hails from
Newry, on the East coast of Ireland, where his family has a long history of
music, singing, and storytelling. He's a regular visitor to our shores and a
popular guest at many a folk club and festival.
In recent times, one of Ben's songs, “We all Need a
Hug”, has been picked up by Cusson’s Imperial Leather, the Soap people, for use in
TV and Cinema commercials in Ireland and the UK, which has given Ben some
well-deserved exposure to a wider audience.
He's a very genuine performer, who
has the gift of immediate rapport with an audience.
Ben plays at the Davy Lamp in the Arts Centre,
Washington on Saturday and at the Rugby Club in Guisborough on Sunday. Highly
recommended!
Filling the guest spot at the Rugby Club in Westoe
on Sunday, 11th will be Paul Dalton and Pat Wilson. The pair, newly married,
sing a wide range of songs, acapella, with some mighty choruses. I love
them!
Monday, 12th May, sees a performance by Bill Whaley
and Dave Fletcher. Well known throughout their native county, Lincolnshire, the
duo have now established themselves throughout the UK folk scene. Their
repertoire encompasses both ancient and modern songs, accompanied in
traditional style on English and duet concertina, harmonium, and melodeon, with
enough choruses to satisfy any audience. The pleasure they get from singing is
obvious and their between songs patter is a joy to hear. You can see them at
the Sun Inn in Stockton on Monday 12th. .
Meanwhile, also on Monday, you will be most welcome
at the Bridge in Newcastle, when my husband , Eric and I will be doing our best
to entertain the assembled throng, and would be delighted to have your
company.
Johnny Silvo was a household name in the 70s, with
regular appearances on TV and radio in programmes like Wally Whyton's 'Walk
Right In' .
Primarily, Johnny is an entertainer, mixing
excellent music with a large measure of humour. He is also a top-notch
guitarist. The ultimate professinal, Johnny plays at the Arts Centre in
Darlington on Thursday, 15th May. If you fancy a bit of nostalgia - go and
check him out.
Elsewhere in the clubs, it's singers' nights,
starting on Friday, 9th May at the
Croxdale Community Centre ; Sunday at the Rugby Club, Guisborough, and the
Causeway, Hartlepool; Monday, 12th at the Smiths Arms, Chester-le-Street,
Tuesday, 13th at the Britannia, Darlington the Sports Club, Newton Aycliffe
and the South Causey Inn, Stanley ; Wednesday, 14th at the Beamish Mary, No
Place and the RAOB in Birtley and on Thursday, 15th May at the Shakespeare,
Durham, the Wellington, Wolviston, the Black Bull in Blaydon and the Duke
William at Skelton ( with a hotspot from local performer, Norman
Eadie.)
Special events this
week include a performance by the one and only Vin Garbutt at the Town Hall in
Bishop Auckland, ably supported by the very talented John Wrightson Band. For
